The cooperative is made up of 1,536 small coffee farmers, all belonging to the indigenous Tzeltal and Chol ethnic groups. These farmers reside in the remote Tumbalá region of Chiapas, where their languages and cultural heritage have been preserved.
The name YAX, meaning "green" in the Tzeltal language, reflects the indigenous worldview of the cooperative’s members, who see "Mother Earth" as the foundation of all life.
The farmers are deeply committed to organic coffee production, growing their crops under shade trees without the use of chemical inputs. Their plantations boast a rich diversity of plants, ensuring the preservation of local biodiversity.
Yaxcoffee’s mission is to improve the living conditions of small-scale coffee producers by organizing the production, harvesting, processing, and marketing of high-quality, organic, and fair-trade coffee. They proudly describe their product as "Café con Solidaridad"—coffee with solidarity—emphasizing its profound social impact.
